One month and six days after my 18th birthday, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The days following seemed like the end of my happiness. Little did I know, there are great organizations, doctors, and people fighting for a cure every day. I am lucky enough to be interning at Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org) for the fall semester. I have a great interest in lobbying and public policy, so hopefully this will be a stepping stone and platform to explore the possibilities for a future career and at the same time, find a cure for type 1 diabetes!
I have participated in a long-term research study through TrialNet. It just recently concluded and we expect the findings to be published soon (unfortunately they did not find the results they were hoping for, but they did get definitive answers, which are the next best thing).
After a long period of time resisting medical advice and care (my mother is a nurse and knows everyyyything), I began pumping in December 2007 and couldn't be happier right now.
With my pump, a daily exercise, friends, family, great doctors and advocates - I have full confidence that a cure will come during my lifetime! In the meantime, I will bolus and basal and grab my colorful glucometers.
